Type 1 Aggregates

Type 1 aggregates are made from pure crushed concrete. Sizes of the grains range from dust, to 40mm, for easy compacting. MOT Type 1 is also known as DOT Type 1 and is the most widely used aggregate in the construction industry. All aggregates classified as 'Type 1' quality must comply with clause 803 (SHW 803), as stated in the Department of Transport Specification for Highway Works. Type 2 Aggregates

Instead, it is normally used to form the lower part of a base layer underneath a layer of Type 1.

These aggregates contain crushed tarmac and are produced by a cold milling machine as it removes the surface layer of tarmac on a road or footpath. The resulting waste is loaded into a lorry and is officially known as Road Planings, although many in the industry refer to it as Road Scrapings or Road Scalpings.

These aggregates are not suitable as backfill for drainage trenches, as a result of the high fines content. Road Planings are generally considered eco-friendly as bitumen is a natural substance. Using them also helps to preserve quarried stocks of aggregates. Road planings are ideal for creating hard standings.
